What’s the first impression you want to give people?

When we meet someone for the first time, we usually get a glimpse of who they are through their actions, words, or even the way they carry themselves. But what if the first impression we give isnโt the whole story? What if itโs just the beginning of a much deeper journey that leaves everyone or ourselves included surprised by what weโre truly capable of?
For me, the first impression I want to give people is simple: I want to be approachable, grounded, and kind. But Iโve learned over the years that what people see on the surface isn’t always the full picture. Often, the real story is unfolding quietly behind the scenes, where persistence, resilience, and a bit of unpredictability come into play.
Life’s Journey: Underestimated, But Never Defeated
Let me take you back for a moment. Growing up, I was often underestimated. Iโve had my fair share of moments where people looked at me and thought, โTheyโll never make itโ or โTheyโre not cut out for this.โ Whether it was in school, sports, or even in professional settings, Iโve seen the doubt in peopleโs eyes. Sometimes, I could feel their expectations of me were way lower than what I knew I was capable of achieving.
But hereโs the thing: those expectations didnโt break me, they fueled me. I realized that being underestimated can be a huge advantage because it gives you the space to surprise people, to exceed expectations in a way they never saw coming.
At first, I might not have had all the answers, or maybe I wasnโt the loudest voice in the room. But I was always listening, learning, and working toward my goals. I didnโt need to prove myself to anyone rather I was proving it to myself. And when the time came to show what I could do, I delivered.
The Element of Surprise
Now, Iโve come to embrace the surprise element. Itโs part of my life story. Whether itโs in my personal achievements or my professional journey, people often donโt expect much from me at the start. But by the end of every chapter, I always find a way to surprise them with what Iโve accomplished. It’s not about making a grand statement or showing off but it’s about letting the results speak for themselves.
Maybe itโs because I donโt feel the pressure to live up to othersโ expectations. Maybe itโs because Iโve learned not to box myself in with labels or limitations. When you stop worrying about how people see you and focus on what you can do, the surprises tend to happen naturally.

How to Use the First Impression to Your Advantage
If thereโs one thing Iโve learned, itโs that first impressions are just that first impressions. They donโt have to define you. Whether someoneโs initial take on you is positive or not-so-great, itโs important to remember that it doesnโt dictate your potential. You always have room to grow, evolve, and yes surprise people.
Here are a few things Iโve learned about making the most of first impressions:
1. Stay Humble, But Confident โ People are drawn to those who are genuine and down-to-earth. While you donโt have to shout about your abilities, donโt hide them either. Be confident in your skills without being boastful.
2. Let Your Actions Speak โ Often, words donโt matter as much as what you do. When you show up consistently, work hard, and give it your all, people take notice. Over time, they begin to see you in a different light.
3. Stay Resilient โ Life wonโt always go according to plan. Youโll face setbacks, and there will be moments when people doubt your ability to pull through. But resilience is key. Keep going, even when no one else believes you can.
4. Surprise Yourself โ Donโt just focus on impressing others. Sometimes the biggest surprise is the one you give yourself when you realize what you’re capable of achieving. Donโt limit yourself based on others’ expectations. You may surprise yourself by going further than you ever thought possible.
Wrapping It Up
The first impression is just the beginning of the story. The real magic happens when you exceed expectations, defy assumptions, and show the world (and yourself) just how much youโre truly capable of.
So, the next time someone underestimates you, take it as a challengeโnot as a setback. Because the best surprises are the ones that no one saw coming. And who knows? Maybe your next surprise will be the one that changes everything.
Keep surprising them.
